Vocabulary: Hope/Wait/Expect


Em Inglês as pessoas normalmente confundem os usos das palavras Hope/Wait/Expect pois em português há basicamente uma única Definição.

ESPERAR em português pode ser ESPERAR ALGUÉM NA ESTAÇÃO DO METRÔ no sentido de ficar lá plantado em pé quando se marca um encontro.ESPERAR NO SENTIDO DE EXPECTATIVA como todos nós Brasileiros esperamos que o Brasil vença a próxima Copa do Mundo.ESPERAR no sentido de ter fé/esperança como se alguém esperasse que os políticos brasileiros sejam honestos(Senta e espera), leia portanto as definições em Inlês.

HOPE = to want something to happen or to be true, and usually have a good reason to think that it might.
Ex:
I'm hoping for an interview next week.
She's hoping (that) she won't be away too long.
I hope (that) she'll win.
We have to hope and pray (that) the operation will go well.
They hope to visit us next year.
It's good news, I hope.
"Will you be at the meeting tomorrow?" "I hope not/so".

WAIT = to allow time to go by, especially while staying in one place without doing very much, until someone comes, until something that you are expecting happens or until you can do something
Ex:
I waited for her in the corridor, while she went in to see the doctor.
The dentist kept me waiting for ages.
There were a lot of people waiting to use the telephone.

EXPECT = to think or believe something will happen, or someone will arrive
We are expecting a lot of applicants for the job.
Ex:
I expect (that) you'll find it somewhere in your bedroom.
I expect (that) he'd have left anyway.
He didn't expect to see me.
The financial performance of the business is fully expected (= almost certain) to improve.
