Mas desde o começo as pessoas o chamavam de "daschund sausage" (salsicha daschund) porque ela parecia-se com o cachorro daschund, comprido e magro. Nos Estados Unidos, a salsicha alemã era popular principalmente entre os fãs de baisebol de Nova Iorque, que compravam o novo sanduíche de vendedores ambulantes que os vendia gritando: Comprem suas "daschund sausages" enquanto elas estão "red dog" (aquecidas ao rubro). Ted Dorgan, um importante cartunista da época, achava esses ambulantes tão cômicos que resolveu satirizá-los.
Em seu cartum, eles foram mostrados vendendo cães daschund verdadeiros em um pão, gritando: "Comprem seus cachorros quentes". O nome pegou, e o resto é estória.
